TFF/CFF Homepage

Welcome to the Thames Flood Forum (TFF) and Chertsey Flood Forum (CFF) Website.

The Thames Flood Forum (TFF) and Chertsey Flood Forum (CFF) replace the Flood Risk Action Groups (FRAGs), formed after the 2003 floods and will build on their work by keeping progress on their recommendations and actions under review.

The Thames Flood Forum is Chaired by an independent scientist, Tom Crossett, who has worked in the public, private and voluntary sectors and is a former Chairman of the National Flood Forum.

Our Objective:

The Forums exist to help to reduce flood risk to those living and working in the floodplain of the River Thames (between Hurley and Teddington) and the Chertsey Bourne.

Our Approach:

We promote constructive partnership and encourage co-operation and mutual understanding, while respecting the views of our individual members.

We believe that flood risk should be assessed and managed holistically. This means working together to ensure that a package of information and practical action to minimise the probability and consequences of flooding is optimised community by community.

Membership:

We bring together representatives of the Environment Agency, local community groups, Thames Water and elected members and officers as nominated by Local Authorities. Others with an interest are welcome to apply for membership or to observe meetings.

Terms of Reference:

  1. Supporting the development and delivery of a Lower Thames Strategy, from Datchet to Teddington, to manage and reduce flood risk, and to support the development and delivery of further actions to reduce flood risk from Hurley to Datchet.
  2. Co-ordinating the delivery by the member organisations of their actions to ensure an integrated approach.
  3. Providing a channel for communications on flooding and planning policies, issues and projects - at central government, catchment, regional and local level.
  4. Supporting community groups through good communications, sharing of ideas and ways of working and dealing with new issues.
  5. Reviewing and progressing action plans to reduce flood risk as recommended by Clive Onions’ Mechanisms of Flooding report.

Current Themes:

Between February 2006 and July 2007 we are reviewing circumstances and opportunities in relation to four main themes:

  1. Reducing the probability of flooding by better water management.
  2. Community action to reduce the consequences of flooding by:
    1. better awareness of risk.
    2. improved flood warnings.
    3. more appropriate action to prepare for, survive and recover from flooding.
    4. Development planning in the floodplain to minimise future risk.
    5. Insurance to share costs between communities at similar levels of risk.
